Burnout can feel like a heavy fog that clouds every part of your life. For many overwhelmed women, especially those walking a Christian path, burnout is more than just exhaustion. It’s a deep sense of being stuck, lost, and unsure of what comes next. If you find yourself in this place, know that you are not alone. There is hope, and there is a way forward that honors both your feelings and your faith.

I want to share a story that might resonate with you—a story of struggle, surrender, and rediscovery. It’s a story about how I faced burnout, reassessed my life, and learned to let go of control to embrace God’s plan. Along the way, I discovered that surrendering control is not giving up but trusting deeply in what God has already done and will continue to do.

Recognizing Burnout and Feeling Overwhelmed

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps in slowly, often disguised as just being busy or tired. For overwhelmed women, especially those juggling multiple roles—mother, wife, employee, volunteer, friend—the pressure can build until it feels unbearable. The Christian walk adds another layer, as you might feel guilty for struggling or think you should be able to handle everything with grace.

Burnout shows up as:

  • Constant fatigue that rest doesn’t fix

  • Feeling emotionally drained or numb

  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed

  • Difficulty focusing or making decisions

  • A sense of hopelessness or being stuck

  • Depression and constant rumination

If these feelings sound familiar, it’s a sign that your body, mind, and spirit need attention. It’s okay to admit you’re overwhelmed. It’s the first step toward healing.

My Journey Through Burnout

I was once in that place of burnout. I truly believed I could control every outcome in my life—my career, my family, even my spiritual growth. I was a single mother of two kids and, in my mind, I had to be superwoman. I was constantly sick, could barely sleep or eat, and I was the Uber driver for all the activities my kids were enrolled in. I was stretched to the max. I kept telling myself that if I just worked harder and planned better, I could avoid feeling overwhelmed. But the harder I tried, the more exhausted I became.

One day, I realized I had to stop. Not slow down—stop. I had to reassess everything. What was truly serving me? What was draining me? What was God actually asking of me in that season? I began to cut out the things that did not align with His purpose for my life or that stole my peace. It wasn’t easy. In fact, it was painful. But it was necessary for my healing.

The hardest part was admitting something I didn’t want to face—I liked control more than I realized. I was holding tightly to my plans and expectations, trying to manage every outcome because I was afraid to let go. But God, in His mercy, showed me that surrendering control was where my freedom was. I had to trust Him with the outcomes, even when I couldn’t see the full picture. And that’s where my healing truly began.

Seeing What God Has Already Done

When you feel stuck, it’s easy to focus on what’s wrong or what’s missing. But reframing your story means looking back and recognizing God’s faithfulness in your life. What has He already done for you? What blessings, big or small, can you see?

Try this exercise:

  • Write down three moments where you felt God’s presence or guidance.

  • Reflect on challenges you have overcome before.

  • Remember times when unexpected doors opened or prayers were answered.

This practice helps shift your perspective from despair to gratitude. It reminds you that God is not distant or unaware. He has been working in your life all along, even when you couldn’t see it.

Surrendering Control to Embrace God’s Plan

Surrender doesn’t mean giving up your dreams or goals. It means releasing the need to control how and when things happen. It means trusting God’s timing and wisdom, even when it feels uncertain.

Here are some practical steps to help you surrender control:

  • Pray honestly about your fears and desires. Tell God what you’re holding onto and ask for His peace.

  • Set healthy boundaries to protect your time and energy. Saying no is a form of surrender when it means prioritizing your well-being.

  • Simplify your commitments by focusing on what truly matters to you and aligns with God’s calling.

  • Practice daily surrender by reminding yourself that God is in control, not you. This can be a short prayer or a scripture verse.

  • Seek support from a trusted friend, mentor, or coach who understands your faith and struggles.
